AElight Powerlight 24 watt HID flashlight - Short Version - (AE Light Powerlight Personal Searchlight)
The AE Light Powerlight 24 Watt Short packs the same 24 watt HID punch as the AE Light Powerlight PL-24 in a shorter form factor. The PL-24-S is full 2.5 inches shorter and lasts 15 minutes less than its 15.25 inch and longer lasting sibling, the PL-24. For those of you secure in your manhood, the PL-24-S is an attractive alternative, given its lighter weight, smaller form factor and 24 watt HID power. The AE Light PL-24-S has the same bulb and ballast as the PL-24, but a smaller battery, reducing run time by about 15 minutes. This endurance problem can be overcome by purchasing the high output lithium ion battery, which adds back about 10 minutes.

(A brief note about HID flashlights. Halogen incandescent flashlight has a bulb with a filament, much like the common household light bulb. A consistent amount of current is fed to the bulb. The filament glows and light and heat are produced. The filament glows because it is a poor conductor of electricity. Eventually the filament breaks. HID flashlights have a globe of gas that contains 2 electrodes. A spark jumps across the electrodes igniting the gas. Initially, the amount of current required to ignite the gas is high. Once the gas is lit, much less current is required to keep the gas burning. A ballast controls the amount of current sent to the bulb. HID flashlights use about 50% less energy, which means longer battery life than halogen incandescent bulbs and have no filament to break. Thus, the HID bulb life is around 5000 hours, compared to several hundred hours of the filament based incandescent bulb. The HID bulb is more efficient, so it produces much more light with less energy over a long period of time. The trade off, however, is that the ballast that sends current to the bulb is an expensive addition, driving up the cost of the flashlight.)
