The Magnalight EPL-48-3L-LED Explosion Proof LED Light Fixture is U.S./Canada U.L. approved Class 1 Division 1, Class 1 Division 2, carries a T6 temperature rating and is ideal for hazardous locations where flammable chemical/petrochemical vapors exist or have the potential to exist.
The EPL-48-3L-LED is equipped with Magnalight’s specially designed LED T-series bulbs which produce nearly 2.5 times as many foot candles of illumination at 8 feet as compared to standard 54 watt T5-HO lamps when measured with an Extech light meter. Our LED-T series bulbs are visibly brighter than standard T5-HOs and have consistently surprised many of our customers with their unexpectedly high light output levels. The EPL-48-3L-LED fixture is a 4 foot long, 3 lamp, UL listed Class 1 Division 1 and Class 2 Division 1 & 2 explosion proof LED light which is also approved for use in paint spray booth applications.
The lamps are protected by heat and impact resistant Pyrex tubes and the fixture is constructed of copper free aluminum alloy. The lamp reflectors are corrosion resistant heavy gauge aluminum and coated with a high gloss reflective finish. This fixture is multi-voltage capable and is available with a variety of lamp options. The EPL-48-3L provides operators in hazardous locations with a powerful and affordable lighting solution that provides the best explosion proof protection available without sacrificing light quality or fixture durability.

NOTE ON LAMPS: We have eliminated the ballast box normally associated with fluorescent fixtures which reduces overall weight and creates a slimmer unit profile. There is no ballast in this unit and the included LEDT-24W LED lamps have a 50,000+ hour service life, both of which result in extreme efficiency and greatly reduced maintenance costs. The solid state design of the LED lamps give this fixture superior resistance to damage from vibration, extremes in temperature and a lamp service life over twice that of standard T5-HO bulbs.
The 24 watt LED lamps produce more illumination than standard 54 watt T5-HO bulbs, but draw only 1/3rd of current. A standard EPL-48-2L-T5HO explosion proof fluorescent light, with a combined total of 108 watts, draws 1 amp @120 volts. This LED version of the same light, with a total of 72 watts, draws only .4 amp. The EPL-48-3L-LED is multi-voltage (universal) and operates on any voltage from 120V to 277V AC 50/60hz. We also make a 12/24VDC version for low voltage applications (-LV suffix) for DC power.
Additional mounting options: Unless otherwise specified, our standard, most popular configuration is the bracket end mounting shown in the photos above. NOTE: First two photo's show two lamp versions, mounting is identical. We also offer a pendant mount for those needing to suspend the fixture away from the ceiling surface (i.e. suspend from pipe or conduit).
Standard Bracket Mounts: Each bracket is cinched to the bracket mounting peg on each side of the light. The angle of the bracket is set by tightening two cap screws on either side of the bracket. The cap screws act as a set screw. The bracket itself is mounted via a single bolt hole at the top the bracket. There are two brackets, one on each end of the light. Once the brackets are mounted to a surface (ceiling, floor or wall), the light fixture can be removed from the brackets by loosening the cap screws that hold the bracket to the mounting peg. The first picture shown above illustrates the ballast side bracket and also shows the access caps for changing the bulbs. The second picture shows the bracket at the opposite end of the fluorescent light.

Lamp Options
1. Each unit dialectically tested. 2. Fixture arrives assembled and lamped to reduce installation time and cost. Adjustable mounting brackets enable the operator to choose any mounting angle for the fixture, where other models may only offer one or three choices. 3. Fixture constructed of extruded corrosion resistant copper free aluminum alloy. 4. Over-sized, finned ballast housing for 800 mA fixtures provides more heat dissipation and extends ballast life. Larger ballast box accommodates High Output lamp ballasts. Ballast housing easily accessible and externally mounted. Top and bottom covers secured with nuts and bolts, instead of threaded through holes, which can be damaged with dirt. 5. Heavy gauge extruded aluminum reflectors with high gloss reflective finish. Resists dents and corrosion. 6. A wrench is used to unscrew the end caps for relamping the fixture, while other models require the “tap and knock off” method to loosen the end cap. 7. Explosion proof, impact and heat resistant Pyrex tubes provide lamp protection.
1. 50,000 Life Hours 2. Can save 50% or more on energy 3. Qualifies retrofit projects for financial incentives, including utility rebates, tax credits and energy loan programs. 4. Reduces energy use an prolongs life-spans of peripheral cooling units (A/C, Refrigeration) 5. 100% Recyclable 6. No Toxins-Lead, Mercury 7. No UV Light, Infrared Radiation or CO2 emissions. 8. Qualifies building for LEED and other sustainable business cerftifications. 9. Bright, even light maintains consistent color over time. 10. Instant on/off - No Flickering, Delays or Buzzing. 11. Very Good Color Rendering 12. Vibration/Impact Resistant 13. Significantly cooler opertation 14. Less frequent outages, higher output improves workplace safety.
The process by which LEDs produce light is called electroluminescence, and it is far more efficient than the process of resistance used in incandescent lamps. Very little energy is wasted as heat in an LED, and more of the electrical energy converted to light. This allows LEDs to produce the same amount of light as an incandescent while using only a fraction as much electrical energy. [...]
Lighting for paint spray booths must adhere to federal and local regulations regarding the use of lighting in hazardous locations. OSHA offers a wealth of information on explosion proof lighting and hazardous locations and it is never a bad idea to familiarize yourself with what they have to offer if you’ll be operating a paint booth. Lighting for spray paint booths must be approved for hazardous locations and carry certification proving its suitability for use in a particular environment. Paint [...]
A poorly lit paint booth with weak ventilation will lead to poorly matched colors and lots of finishing work to deal with paint contaminants. So, it’s best to be realistic and have a few solid ideas of what you are looking for in a paint spray booth in order to ensure that your new booth is all asset and no liability. [...]
Paint manufacturers have taken these physical properties farther, and now use various pigments and materials to enhance the reflective or absorption properties of other materials to produce colors of exceptional intensity and hue. The problem for paint booth operators is obvious; with such complexities introduced into paint coloration and characteristics, being able to accurately match or reproduce colors is made more difficult. When light hitting an object does not contain a full spectrum of co [...]
As of this writing, OSHA has yet to institute a solid set of standards for combustible dusts. Many officials adopt NFPA recommendations into their local fire codes as a result in order to attempt some level of regulatory standards across a broad spectrum. Whether or not any meaningful regulation emerges from OSHA in the near future, it is best that any industry or commercial operation associated with combustible dusts be preemptive and adhere to any local regulations as well as adopt their own m [...]
