The LEDERL-4 Surface Mount LED light from Magnalight produces 918 lumens of bright white light in a wide flood pattern while drawing only 10.2 watts @950mA on a 12 volt electrical system. This compact, fully sealed and intrinsicallyy safe LED light can be operated on 10 to 30 VDC and is ideal for use in boat engine rooms, as deck lighting, bar or rail mounting and anywhere high quality bright light is desired but space is limited.
This surface mounting LED light fixture is an ideal alternative to, or upgrade from the common 100-200 watt halogen lamps used in marine environments to illuminate boat engine rooms, bridges and decks. These intrinsicallyy safe units produce 918 lumens of high quality light and draw less than one amp when connected to a 12 volt electrical system, resulting in significantly lower power consumption when compared to comparable halogen lamps. The light produced by this unit is much purer and clean without the yellowish tint often associated with halogen or incandescent lamps. This LED light is completely sealed making it USCG certified intrinsicallyy safe-ignition protected and ideal for use in engine rooms and areas where hazardous conditions exist or may exist.
This image shows a dark street with no illumination aside from distant suburban lighting.

This unit’s housing is constructed of marine grade aluminum for high durability and fully sealed against intrusion from water or dust making it IP67 compliant. Measuring only 5 inches long by 2.5 inches wide, this very compact LED light fixture is designed for surface mounting to allow the maximum amount of space savings possible and includes a mounting template as well as four screws to facilitate easy installation onto flat surfaces. Its small size and high output makes this LED light ideal for replacing or upgrading from bulky fluorescent and halogen fixtures. This unit can be operated on voltages ranging from 10 to 30 VDC without any modifications necessary and connection to power is via included power leads and a single ground wire. The LEDs and sealed construction of this unit provide up to 50,000 hours of LED operation and minimal maintenance or upkeep requirements.
3 year warranty replacement on this LED light. After 30 days, the customer ships the failed LED light and/or LED bulb to Larson Electronics’ Magnalight at their expense. When the failed light is returned, Magnalight will ship a new replacement.
Some important considerations to keep in mind are that although an item may be rated as ”IP68”, this does not automatically infer the item can be safely operated at any depth for any period of time without failure. For IP68 ratings, manufacturers choose the specified depth which must be beyond 1 meter at which the enclosure will protect against the ingress of water. Normally, as with industrial lighting equipment or marine lighting intended to be operated for extended periods beyond depths of 1 [...]
For the most part, LED products produced by third parties and manufactured in countries such as China tend to be of lower grade and fail to meet many of their claimed performance specifications. It is also worth noting that LEDs and fixtures are often a joining of two or more manufacturers' products in order to keep production costs low. As a result, many LEDs used in specialized devices and fixtures may come from one manufacturer, while the electronics driving the LEDs and the housing may come [...]
We hear a lot today about how great LEDs are. They use very little energy, theyre the lighting of the future, theyll make the incandescent light bulb obsolete, and every one of these claims is in fact true. However, we dont hear nearly as much about the other everyday ways that LEDs can benefit us, and considering that these benefits are quite considerable, this is something of a shame. [...]
Rechargeable spotlights and flashlights have become an increasingly important part of military operations. As recently as ten years ago military personnel in the field were forced to rely on personal lighting equipment that had very short operational times due to high energy consumption. This required the further addition of up to twenty pounds of batteries to keep them operational during a full mission deployment of ten days. [...]
When most of us think of night vision devices we usually picture the elaborate electronic headgear or special cameras used by military personnel. We usually assume the technology is complicated and the price exorbitant and so we also assume that attractive as being able to see in the dark may be, its beyond the realm of us mere mortals. [...]
While much of the focus on Marine lighting has lately been on the reduced energy usage benefits switching to LEDs from Halogens represents, there is more to the story than just prolonging the charge time of your crafts batteries. If you search the internet or read the magazines dedicated to boating, youre likely to see all sorts of stories touting the great reductions in electrical drain on a boats energy reserves that LEDs produce and little else. [...]
The marine industry is one of the first and largest commercial sectors to capitalize on the revolution in electrical illumination that LED lighting technology represents. Since electrical lighting was first introduced into boating applications, designers in the boating industry have grappled with the need to provide adequate power for electrical systems while maintaining a practical rate of energy consumption on board a ship. [...]
Ever since electrical equipment was first installed on a boat, managing onboard electrical power has been a major concern on everything from small sailboats to large yachts. Although electrical lighting was a major leap forward for marine lighting which at the time consisted of actual lanterns that housed a flame, it immediately created the problem of producing enough electricity to make its use practical. [...]
LED lights have come a long way since their introduction into the marine industry. Rapid advancements in technology coupled with innovative designs have resulted in LEDs capturing a growing segment of the marine lighting equipment industry, with boat manufacturers now incorporating them into their new designs as a part of their standard equipment.
