North America is presently not operating with the IECex/ATEX schemes although some effort has been made to produce some homogenity between North American and European Standards, most notably the US and Canada's adoption of a Zone system (NEC 505) modeled after European Schemes. However, despite the great similarity between North American and European Zone systems, they are not identical and are not interchangeable.

According to OSHA, 30,000 U.S. facilities are at risk of fires and explosions caused by the presence of combustible dusts. OSHA also notes that between 1980 and 2005 118 workers were killed and another 718 injured in incidents involving a combustible dust explosion. Aluminum, steel, coal, grain, plastics, resins, flour, wood and a whole list of others both organic and non organic can become extremely flammable when ground, shaved or in some other way processed into fine particulates. [...]
Rechargeable spotlights and flashlights have become an increasingly important part of military operations. As recently as ten years ago military personnel in the field were forced to rely on personal lighting equipment that had very short operational times due to high energy consumption. This required the further addition of up to twenty pounds of batteries to keep them operational during a full mission deployment of ten days. [...]
Modern technology has completely changed the way warfare is waged today. LEDs and HIDs have made the incandescent spotlight/flashlight obsolete and infrared illumination has gone higher tech with the addition of LED based IR emitters that remove the need for filters or special lenses. All of this technology, however, comes with a price. [...]
When most of us think of night vision devices we usually picture the elaborate electronic headgear or special cameras used by military personnel. We usually assume the technology is complicated and the price exorbitant and so we also assume that attractive as being able to see in the dark may be, its beyond the realm of us mere mortals. [...]
Hazardous location lighting equipment is in the simplest explanation used in places where concentrations of volatile gases, flammable dust or particulates, or flammable chemicals are high enough to present a danger of ignition that can lead to explosion or fire. [...]
Deciding on the proper lighting for a particular work location can result in some unexpected confusion. Although many people understand that the presence of flammable or volatile materials and gases present a hazard, they do not understand the nature of equipment that must be used in such locations. [...]
Most paint spray booths utilize one of two types of lighting fixtures in their design, either fluorescent tubes, or high intensity discharge lamps. Incandescent lamps are poor choices for spray booth applications because they are highly inefficient, have very short life-spans, and produce copious amounts of heat during their operation. [...]
Two of the biggest factors in the development and implementation of explosion proof lighting technology are economics and regulations. The standards and requirements regulating the design of explosion proof lighting as outlined by OSHA, the International Electrical Code and others dictate a high level of design strength and ignition resistance, and these in turn increase the costs associated with such equipment. [...]
Confined spaces represent some of the most dangerous work places in commercial industries. Because of their enclosed nature confined spaces are poorly ventilated and allow volatile gases, fumes, vapors, and particulates to accumulate and increase in atmospheric density to potentially explosive levels. Confined spaces represent a hazardous work area and are loosely defined by a few general characteristics. [...]
Hazardous work areas are one of the most demanding environments for the workers and equipment that must operate within them. The often confined spaces combined with the presence of volatile materials presents a serious danger of fires and explosions that must be adequately addressed to insure the safety of workers and the public in both the work space and the surrounding area. [...]
When it comes to explosion proof lighting many people have trouble understanding exactly what the term means. Factor in that there is also the term “intrinsically safe light” which is related to explosion proof lighting, and the fact that few people have had the benefit of a good layman explanation of the terms, and it becomes clear that there is plenty of room for confusion. [...]
One of the most critical aspects of a properly designed spray booth is the type of lighting to be used in its operation. For most applications, the number and size of the lights needed is determined by the size of the booth. The second most important consideration is the quality of the illumination provided by these lights. [...]
Protecting against fire and explosions is a critical part of safety measures in many industrial environments. Explosion proof lighting, intrinsically safe lighting, and explosion proof electrical equipment are all commonly included parts of the comprehensive safety measures implemented to create and provide this protection. [...]
Hazardous work areas present special challenges for the workers and businesses that must operate within them. These work areas are often confined rooms or containers like fuel tanks where vapors and gases from work activities can become concentrated to dangerous levels. As well as the obvious dangers posed by inhalation of these contaminants are the not so obvious dangers that can have lethal consequences if not properly addressed. [...]
Marine engine rooms, commercial paint booths, chemical storerooms, grain silos, tank farms; what do they all have in common? Each and every one of these is a potential bomb waiting to go off. Under certain conditions and with the right combination of circumstances, the possibility of a catastrophic explosion occurring becomes a near certainty. [...]
