Fluorescents, LEDs and Color Rendering Index: More than Just Color Reproduction
The color rendering index is a scale devised some time ago to measure how colors may change in appearance when illuminated by a light source as compared to an accepted standard light source with the same color temperature. For example, a color chart with several different colors may be set up and illuminated with an incandescent lamp which is used as a standard reference. Then, the same color chart will be illuminated with a fluorescent lamp and any changes in how each of the colors appear are t [...] |

Lighting Color Temperature in Basic Terms and Applications
Commercial applications most often make use of lamps producing cool white light in the 4000 to 6500 Kelvin range because their light is sharper and more intense, with better color rendering and contrasting properties. Objects illuminated by these lamps appear brighter, more sharply defined, making these lamps well suited for offices, retail stores and commercial areas where detail and sharpness is important.
Lamps with temperatures around 5000-5500 Kelvin are usually considered to produce natu [...] |

LED Mine Lighting and Worker Safety
Utilizing controlled tests involving standard mining cap lights, common commercial grade LEDs, and a special LED mining light design of their own making, they found that for most intents and purposes, LEDs provided a greater degree of contrast and improved threat detection times as shown by test subjects. Particularly in the case of workers over the age of 40, with 43 years being the average age of mine workers, contrasting of LED illuminated objects was improved 43%. Additionally, threat detect [...] |

Modern Mining Lights: From Birds to Flames to LEDs
It wouldn’t be until 1902 that practical electrical lamps were introduced in mines and removed the need for open flames. Electrical lamps greatly reduced the possibility of fires and explosions, but again, by today’s standards they were hardly safe. Early electric lamps got hot, the batteries were unwieldy and leaked acids, and shattered bulbs and shorted wires were all too capable of causing an accident. By the 1930’s electric lighting was the only mine lighting in use, although the older Davy [...] |

Choosing Spray Paint Booth Lighting and Booth Design
A poorly lit paint booth with weak ventilation will lead to poorly matched colors and lots of finishing work to deal with paint contaminants. So, it’s best to be realistic and have a few solid ideas of what you are looking for in a paint spray booth in order to ensure that your new booth is all asset and no liability. [...] |

Paint Booth Lights for Modern Paint Types
Paint manufacturers have taken these physical properties farther, and now use various pigments and materials to enhance the reflective or absorption properties of other materials to produce colors of exceptional intensity and hue. The problem for paint booth operators is obvious; with such complexities introduced into paint coloration and characteristics, being able to accurately match or reproduce colors is made more difficult. When light hitting an object does not contain a full spectrum of co [...] |

IECex/ATEX and North American NEC HAZLOC Equipment Classification
North America is presently not operating with the IECex/ATEX schemes although some effort has been made to produce some homogenity between North American and European Standards, most notably the US and Canada's adoption of a Zone system (NEC 505) modeled after European Schemes. However, despite the great similarity between North American and European Zone systems, they are not identical and are not interchangeable.

Combustible Dust Standards and Preemptive Safety
As of this writing, OSHA has yet to institute a solid set of standards for combustible dusts. Many officials adopt NFPA recommendations into their local fire codes as a result in order to attempt some level of regulatory standards across a broad spectrum. Whether or not any meaningful regulation emerges from OSHA in the near future, it is best that any industry or commercial operation associated with combustible dusts be preemptive and adhere to any local regulations as well as adopt their own m [...] |

Confined Space Lighting for Hazardous Locations
Confined spaces represent some of the most dangerous work places in commercial industries. Because of their enclosed nature confined spaces are poorly ventilated and allow volatile gases, fumes, vapors, and particulates to accumulate and increase in atmospheric density to potentially explosive levels. Confined spaces represent a hazardous work area and are loosely defined by a few general characteristics. [...] |
