LED Mine Lighting and Worker Safety
Utilizing controlled tests involving standard mining cap lights, common commercial grade LEDs, and a special LED mining light design of their own making, they found that for most intents and purposes, LEDs provided a greater degree of contrast and improved threat detection times as shown by test subjects. Particularly in the case of workers over the age of 40, with 43 years being the average age of mine workers, contrasting of LED illuminated objects was improved 43%. Additionally, threat detect [...] |

Mine Lighting and Improving Effectiveness and Safety with LEDs
Electrical lighting for mines has predominantly been of a few specific types including incandescent lamps, HID luminaires, and fluorescent tubes. The problems with such mine lighting technologies stems largely from their power requirements and low durability factors. Each of these lighting types is of a construction that utilizes fragile materials such as glass and thin wire filaments that hold little resistance to abusive handling and conditions. Compounding the durability issue is the hazardou [...] |

Paint Spray Booth Lighting: Safety and Effectiveness
Lighting for paint spray booths must adhere to federal and local regulations regarding the use of lighting in hazardous locations. OSHA offers a wealth of information on explosion proof lighting and hazardous locations and it is never a bad idea to familiarize yourself with what they have to offer if you’ll be operating a paint booth. Lighting for spray paint booths must be approved for hazardous locations and carry certification proving its suitability for use in a particular environment. Paint [...] |

Modern Mining Lights: From Birds to Flames to LEDs
It wouldn’t be until 1902 that practical electrical lamps were introduced in mines and removed the need for open flames. Electrical lamps greatly reduced the possibility of fires and explosions, but again, by today’s standards they were hardly safe. Early electric lamps got hot, the batteries were unwieldy and leaked acids, and shattered bulbs and shorted wires were all too capable of causing an accident. By the 1930’s electric lighting was the only mine lighting in use, although the older Davy [...] |

Paint Spray Booth Lighting Fundamentals
Of huge importance to paint spray booth applications is the safety regulation compliance of the lighting equipment and its suitability for use in a hazardous environment. Due to the flammable nature of the chemicals and compounds used within the booth, removing potential sources of ignition is critical. Since any electrical equipment used is a potential source of heat, sparks or flame, it must be properly designed and certified for use in hazardous locations. Paint spry booth lighting that is mo [...] |

IECex/ATEX and North American NEC HAZLOC Equipment Classification
North America is presently not operating with the IECex/ATEX schemes although some effort has been made to produce some homogenity between North American and European Standards, most notably the US and Canada's adoption of a Zone system (NEC 505) modeled after European Schemes. However, despite the great similarity between North American and European Zone systems, they are not identical and are not interchangeable.
